Rolex Daytona 116520

Daytona 116520
40mm, White, Oyster

I first bought it in 2008. But I have a bit of a peculiar side so I bought the same model twice. This watch has a lot of stories.
In 2008, The Daytona steel model was extremely popular. As I remember, The waitlist for the black dial was about two years and for the white dial about one year. I tried to get on the waitlist at a department store but there were so many people waiting that they stopped accepting new names. At that time, I was part of a car club and sometimes watches were posted on the forum. Someone posted that after waiting a year, They were finally going to get their watch in two weeks but due to circumstances, They were looking for someone to take it instead. I said I would buy it, So I met the person at the Rolex store in the Trade Center and received the watch right away.
Later, When I opened a new clinic, I needed a lot of money so I sold the watch. I think it was about six months after buying it and I even sold it for about one million won more than I paid. But I did have some regrets. So I bought it again in 2010.
It is a watch that has meaning for me. I searched hard for the watch I wanted and finally found it with difficulty, But I had to sell it to pay my staff. So that nostalgia, That longing remained, And just like the first time, I joined watch communities and searched hard. I bought it in the same way as before, From someone who had been waiting. In the year and a half to two years in between, The price had gone up again. I remember the retail price was about 11.2 million won when I first bought it, And the second time it was over 12 million won. It is a meaningful watch to me.
At first, I also wanted the black dial. But since I happened to get the white dial first, I think I fell for its charm. The second time, I deliberately looked for the white dial, As if I was searching for the watch I had lost.
I was an intern in 2001 and a first-year resident in 2002. Back then, Rolex had a somewhat old-fashioned image. Friends and seniors my age did not look for Rolex watches when getting married. Tag Heuer was much more popular as a wedding gift at the time. (Of course, Older people still liked the Datejust two-tone the most.)
I also had a Tag Heuer Carrera, And around 2007 I was briefly active in a sports car club. When I was driving a Porsche, A close friend was very interested in watches. I heard a lot about watches from him, And he recommended Rolex as the best.
That is when I started to get interested in watches, Joined communities, And even gave my mother a Datejust as a gift. But for me, There was no model that I really liked. The Submariner, Which was about 7.8 to 8 million won at the time, Did not catch my eye.
Is the main dial of the Daytona called a chronograph? It is just so beautiful. Since it is named after a car race, It has a story, So I wanted to buy it. I asked a friend who traveled to Japan often, And he said, "Daytona has a big premium in Japan." Maybe because I could not get it, I wanted it even more. I was completely obsessed and after searching and searching, I finally managed to get one.
Around 2013, When I opened my clinic in Cheongdam, I often saw actor C, Who used to be a model, At a local restaurant where I had lunch. He worked out nearby and I saw him often. He had a Daytona black dial model that looked similar to mine, But he had customized it stylishly. Some time later, I was having drinks with actor J, Who is famous for his looks, And his Daytona bracelet looked similar to actor C's, So I asked about it.
He told me it was Chrome Hearts. Chrome Hearts had just become popular in Korea thanks to GD. There was only one store in Cheongdam, And when I went, There were only a few in the country and they were sold out. If I wanted to order, I would have to wait a long time. So I got on the waitlist and waited a long time to finally get it.
The time keeps well so I have not done anything yet, But I am planning to do an overhaul when I change the bracelet.
People around me send messages or ask me to sell it. But I do not sell. Friends who like watches told me the price has gone up a lot. Since I know the old price, It feels like a waste to sell. Now, You cannot buy it at the old price.
Around the summer of 2005, When I was a resident, My family had financial difficulties. At that time, I was earning about two million won a month. Later, When I opened my clinic, I became more financially stable, But I had to take responsibility for my family. Maybe because of that sense of responsibility, I had a desire to reward myself. But now, All of that is gone. As I got older, That desire disappeared. Clothes, Shoes, Watches, Cars, I am not interested in those things anymore. But I do want to buy a Patek Philippe for formal wear. (laughs)
In 2013-14, I wanted an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, Especially the blue dial chronograph model. Around the time the Hublot Big Bang series was popular, I had the Aero Bang model with a skeleton dial. I lost this watch during a trip to Busan and bought it again.
First of all, I really like the size. It is 40mm. I do not get tired of it and I think it is the best. I wear it almost every day except when I play golf or on days when it is hard to wear a watch.
The joy of ownership is nice, But it does not last long. When you first get it, You are happy, But after about a week, The excitement fades. But with the Daytona, I keep reaching for it. I have a bit of an obsessive personality and like routines. For example, Once I choose a perfume, I keep using the same one, And with clothes, I keep wearing the same brand I like. It is the same with watches.
I am thinking about going back to a clean style Oyster bracelet from Chrome Hearts, But honestly, The current combination goes well with both casual and formal wear. It does not look too heavy, So it matches well with any outfit. But I think I will change the bracelet soon and spend another decade or more with a different style of Daytona. It is a watch full of memories.
