Omega has released a successor to the FOIS (First OMEGA In Space) which was a reissue of the second generation Speedmaster CK2998. The original FOIS model had its own fan base thanks to its unique charm that set it apart from the standard Speedmaster Moonwatch, So this new FOIS has also received a very positive response. Let us take a look at the various Speedmaster reissue editions that Omega has introduced so far.

1. Speedmaster 1st Generation CK2915

The Omega Speedmaster made its debut in 1957 under the name CK2915, Alongside the Seamaster 300 CK2913 and Railmaster CK2914. Since 2000, Models derived from this original, Such as the Broad Arrow and Two Counter, Have been part of the regular lineup. The first generation Speedmaster looks quite different from the current Moonwatch and, With its symbolic status as the original, Has been reissued several times. Let us look at these in order.

1.1 3594.50 Speedmaster ‘57 Replica

Although the watch is called a replica, This refers not to a counterfeit but to a reproduction of the original.

Interestingly, The dial follows the first generation Speedmaster while the rest of the case is modeled after the then-current Moonwatch. This approach was also used in the subsequent Aqua Terra Railmaster. At the time, Omega would use the same case but change the dial and some elements to release it as a reissue edition. For this reason, Some enthusiasts who prefer the original tend to favor models like the Replica or Aqua Terra Railmaster over other Omega reissues.

1.2 1957 Trilogy

Nearly 20 years after the incomplete reissue of the Replica, Omega released a limited edition that almost perfectly recreated the three watches from 1957 for their 60th anniversary.

Except for the bracelet being updated to a modern style, The movement being the 1861 instead of the original 321, And the luminous material being changed to Luminova, The watch was reissued almost identically to the original. Considering the original’s astronomical price, This is the most realistic option for those who want to enjoy the first generation Speedmaster.

1.3 321 Canopus Gold

In early 2022, Omega suddenly announced a reissue of the CK2915 using Canopus Gold. The Canopus Gold edition, Which was released at 104, 900, 000 KRW and is now retailing at 132, 100, 000 KRW as of October 2024, Features the 321 movement, An onyx dial, And Omega’s Canopus Gold material, Making it an ultra-luxurious model.

2. Speedmaster 2nd Generation CK2998

The second generation CK2998, Released in 1959, Featured a black bezel and alpha hands, Unlike its predecessor, And was the first Omega Speedmaster to go into space.

In 2012, Omega announced a reissue of the CK2998. At a time when only the 42mm Speedmaster Moonwatch was available, The 39.7mm FOIS gained popularity for its smaller size. Later, Various editions were produced, Including the Sedna Gold in 2015, A color combination reminiscent of the current Snoopy in 2016, And the Pulsometer edition in 2018.

Although it is somewhat disappointing that the font is more modern and there is no bracelet compared to other reissues, Until the release of the second generation FOIS, It was the most accessible straight-lug Speedmaster.

2.2 FOIS 2nd Generation

In 2024, Omega announced the successor to the FOIS. The new model features a perfectly refined dial font and even a sapphire glass with a curvature not used even in the 321 Ed White. Although the dial is a blue sunray and the color of the faux patina is somewhat polarizing, Many say the sunray effect is not too strong in person and the blue dial is quite dark, So the watch looks very appealing in reality. In particular, Previous models with sapphire glass were often criticized for the glass, But this new model has completely resolved that issue.

The sunray dial itself has its own heritage. There are Speedmaster models with a sunray dial called Soleil.

If the second generation was the first to go beyond Earth, The third generation was the first to be officially used by NASA for a mission in space in 1965. Unlike the previous two generations, Which have been reissued with various movements, The third generation has only been reissued with the caliber 321.

Although the sunray dial was never used on the CK2998, It is not an entirely new element that appeared out of nowhere.

3. Speedmaster 3rd Generation 105.003 Ed White

If the second generation was the first to go beyond Earth, The third generation was the first to be officially used by NASA for a mission in space in 1965. Unlike the previous two generations, Which have been reissued with various movements, The third generation has only been reissued with the caliber 321.

3.1 Caliber 321 Ed White

Omega perfectly recreated the caliber 321 using tomography techniques and used premium materials such as gold to capture the original color. They also established a dedicated workshop for the 321, Where a single watchmaker is responsible for each movement. The exterior was also recreated to match the original 105.003 as closely as possible, With only the glass, Bezel, And luminous material being different. The bracelet, Like the previous Trilogy and FOIS, Is based on the original design but produced with Omega’s current level of craftsmanship.

Unlike the relatively easy-to-purchase limited edition Trilogy, The Ed White is not a limited edition but is produced in small quantities as a special edition. As a result, It was sold primarily to VIPs who met certain purchase requirements, And for the same reason, It initially traded at a premium on the secondary market. Although the retail price has increased and the premium is not as high as before, For those who want to enjoy the quality of a modern watch with the design of a vintage Speedmaster, This is truly a dream model.

As for the fourth generation, It is unclear whether Omega considers the current Speedmaster Moonwatch as the fourth generation or is saving it as a secret weapon, But there has not yet been a reissue. All of the models discussed today can also be found on VIVER, So if you find the Speedmaster Moonwatch a bit monotonous, We recommend taking an interest in the models introduced here.
