King Midas was released in 1962. Crafted from an entire block of 18k yellow and white gold, the King Midas was Rolex's most expensive model at the time and the heaviest gold watch on the market.

The left-leaning asymmetrical design was inspired by the pantheon of ancient Greece, and the crown was placed on the left side of the case to symbolize the left hand of King Midas, who turned everything he touched into gold.
